The Sussex County Health Coalition commemorated National Community Health Worker (CHW) Awareness Week, highlighting the essential contributions of CHWs within our communities. Executive Director, Peggy Geisler stressed the need for a robust health workforce to support and uplift all individuals, particularly those encountering difficulties such as understanding healthcare, navigating health insurance, and addressing literacy, digital access, and language barriers. She noted that “trained advocates are crucial for enhancing patient outcomes and lowering healthcare costs.”
Community Health Workers (CHWs) are essential public health professionals who are deeply trusted within the communities they support. They play a vital role in promoting health equity and enhancing public health outcomes nationwide by connecting underserved populations with the healthcare systems designed to assist them. From August 26th to 30th, various communities, organizations, and health systems came together to celebrate the invaluable contributions of CHWs.
GOALS OF NATIONAL CHW AWARENESS WEEK:
- Highlight the Impact: CHWs connect healthcare systems with underserved populations, helping navigate services, manage chronic conditions, and make informed health decisions.
- Promote Advocacy: This week highlights the need for more funding and support to ensure CHWs have the resources and recognition to continue their vital work.
- Celebrate Achievements: We honor the exceptional commitment, compassion, and resilience of CHWs in their roles
- Encourage Collaboration: We invite healthcare providers, policymakers, and community leaders to work together to strengthen support for CHWs and expand their impact.
In acknowledgment of the essential role that Community Health Workers (CHWs) play in our society, SCHC was privileged to receive a special tribute during Community Health Worker Awareness Week from Senator Dave Wilson. This tribute celebrates the unwavering dedication of CHWs in enhancing public health, bridging disparities, and empowering communities.
