Leading the Effort

Addiction Action Committee
9/27/2024 Sussex County Health Coalition.

The Addiction Action Committee (AAC), created under Delaware's House Bill 220, is at the forefront of tackling the state's addiction crisis. This legislation, signed by Governor John Carney at the future SUN Behavioral Health Hospital site, is part of a larger effort to improve mental health services and curb the addiction epidemic. The Addiction Action Committee builds on the work of the former Prescription Drug Action Committee, expanding its scope to address addiction in all forms, particularly the opioid crisis, which claimed over 300 lives in Delaware in 2016.

The Committee’s primary responsibility is to develop and recommend a strategic approach for addressing addiction statewide. It gathers experts from healthcare, law enforcement, and community organizations to collaborate on immediate and long-term solutions. By focusing on prevention, treatment, and recovery, the Committee aims to reduce barriers to care, coordinate services more effectively, and monitor progress in combating addiction throughout the state.

Community members and professionals can participate in this vital work by connecting with Akiba Daniels at HMA (adaniels@healthmanagement.com) or the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS). Resources, including a 24/7 crisis hotline, are available to assist individuals struggling with addiction.

For those in New Castle County, the hotline number is 800-652-2929; for Kent and Sussex Counties, it’s 800-345- 6785. Additionally, the "Help is Here" website (www.HelpIsHereDE.com) provides resources, treatment options, and ways for advocates and volunteers to engage in the ongoing fight against addiction.

Delaware residents can support the Committee’s efforts to address addiction and improve behavioral health by joining support groups, advocating for policy changes, or volunteering. We encourage your involvement in the AAC or its subcommittees during Delaware Goes Purple!
